Genre: Drama
Available on: Netflix
Based on the true events of the 1862 Maharaj Libel Case, and also depicted in Saurabh Shah’s novel, this movie masterfully recreates the era with stunning cinematography and exquisite costumes. Jaideep Ahlawat delivers an exceptional performance, his smirks and satirical dialogue adding depth to his character. Junaid Khan, in his debut role, impresses without relying on hype or heavy promotions.
The film’s portrayal of the true story is both unsettling and thought-provoking, highlighting the persistence of superstitious rituals. It’s a stark reminder of how little has changed, with people still falling prey to dishonest sages who manipulate their followers.
While the movie may lack unforgettable songs, its soundtrack is appropriately situational and complements the narrative flow. The nuances of Maharaj’s character, especially scenes where his followers place their hands on the ground to prevent his feet from touching it, vividly convey his pride and perceived divinity. However, the climax, where he smiles despite his fall from grace, showcases his refusal to acknowledge defeat.
Junaid Khan’s portrayal of Karsandas is commendable for a newcomer. His believable dialogue delivery and rural accent stand out, especially when compared to his father’s performance in Lagaan. Junaid’s potential for future success is evident in this strong debut.
The film not only revisits an old libel case but also serves as a commentary on the gullibility of the public and the exploitation by those who claim divine status for personal gain. It’s a beautifully crafted movie with a powerful message, deserving of more than 4 stars.
