Vishal Bhardwaj, known for his cinematic brilliance, seems to have missed the mark with his latest directorial venture, “Khufiya.” Despite a promising cast including Tabu, Ali Fazal, Ashish Vidyarthi, and Wamiqa Gabbi, the movie falls short of expectations.
The trailer hinted at an intriguing plot, but the film’s execution left much to be desired. The screenplay lacked the intensity required for a thriller spy movie, and the excessive length only added to the sense of tedium. In a genre that demands a tight narrative and powerful dialogues, “Khufiya” disappointingly failed on both fronts.
Although the film wisely avoided unnecessary song sequences, Rekha Bhardwaj’s brief musical interlude provided a pleasant break. However, the cinematography, a trademark of Bhardwaj’s earlier works, felt lacking in this film, leading to the impression that he directed it merely as an obligation.
Surprisingly, Bhardwaj’s previous short film, “Fursat,” outshines “Khufiya” in terms of cinematography, dialogues, and music. “Khufiya” lacks the entertainment value necessary to captivate audiences. Those who endure the entire movie do so primarily to uncover its conclusion or to understand Bhardwaj’s reasoning behind this lacklustre production.
In contrast to his previous cinematic achievements, “Khufiya” fails to engage viewers, making it advisable to skip this film and explore Bhardwaj’s earlier works instead. One can only hope that Bhardwaj will return with a more compelling and outstanding project in the future, perhaps another Shakespearean adaptation, to delight his dedicated audience. Let’s remain optimistic about what the future holds.
